A GARDEN FOR ALL SEASONS
A garden is a lifelong pursuit and a daily reminder of our symbiotic relationship with nature. I appreciate the perspective of architect Christopher Alexander who speaks of design in a way that is very aligned with garden planning: “When you build a thing you cannot merely build that thing in isolation, but also repair the world around it, and within it so the larger world at that one place becomes more coherent, and more whole; and the thing which you make takes its place in the web of nature, as you make it”.
This has felt important especially as Maison Bodega walks the line between a live and work space. The garden immediately shows guests and passersby that this is a place that is loved and cared for and to treat it as such. Our gardens and planning are very impacted by seasons. In Minneapolis, we will see a 130 degree shift between the coldest day of the winter and the warmest day of summer. Plants are selected to be hardy and also to be ‘showy’ in both their blooming and seeding states. They also should offer food in multiple seasons for bugs, birds or humans.
