Maison Bodega
is located at 1911 Pleasant Ave.
in the Loring Heights neighborhood of Minneapolis
and was built in 1920.

-

The original architect, Ernest Kennedy’s signature style is evident in this and other notable homes in the city.

-
Ernest Kennedy was born in Mankato, Minnesota, in 1865 and moved to Minneapolis at age 10. He attended the University of Minnesota in 1888 but did not graduate. He later attended the Sorbonne in Paris and the Berlin and Munich Polytechnics.

Kennedy returned to Minneapolis and set up his own practice by 1897, specializing in the design of mansions and residences in Minneapolis and the vicinity of Lake Minnetonka.

Among his residential clients were Alfred Pillsbury, E.C. Gale, Gilbert and Archie Walker. He was also responsible for the design of Shevlin Hall at the University of Minnesota (1905) and numerous commercial structures in the area, including the Essex Building (1911) in downtown Minneapolis in which Kennedy had his office for many years.

DIARY

-

The building's renovation began in 2017 and embraces a design philosophy rooted in preservation and phenomenology.

It was conceived by creative director Liz Gardner in collaboration with architect Toby Rapson of RAPSON Architects, the firm founded by his father, Ralph Rapson—a Modernist who studied and worked alongside Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, and Harry Weese. Having grown up in the architecture business, Toby worked as his father’s right hand from the age of 12, and has shaped the practice with a pragmatism and refined sensibility.
